What’s your calling ?

I just finished my first week working in a flowers farm here in Australia. While picking tiny eatable flowers, you have a lot of time to think and tergiversate.

Remember people asking you… What do you want to do when you grow up ? Now it’s more like what are you doing with your life, but still !

Did you find what you wanted to do with your life ? Did you find THE thing that will make you successful ? Even though we all know by now we won’t be just one thing in our life.

We won’t have just one career path, we won’t have just one job for the rest of our life. We won’t have something steady and secure because this is just not how it works.

So… Did you find what you wanted to do ? How did you achieve your goal ? Why did you choose this or was it even a choice ?

I want to be a storyteller.

When growing up I was asked what do I want to do when I grow up, I couldn’t have an answer that lasted more than a week. I would read an article, see a movie or look at the journal and have a new idea, a new interest.

I would want to become a scientist to a poet, a soldier to a National Geographic photographer, a nomad artist to a teacher, a singer to a doctor, an ambassador of UNICEF or a reporter in Afghanistan, a nurse in Africa or a hotel manager, an airport controller to a restaurant owner, a politician to a police officer… The list goes on and on.

I realized, the one steady thing I did in all those ideas was imagining a life around it, a character I would have, people I would surround myself with, the environment I would live in. From one idea, I would create a story. And people will actually go in this imaginary world, even for 5 minutes and embrace it.

Some people know what they wanted to do since they can’t even remember when, some people discover their calling later on in life after experiences brought them where they were suppose to be. I am part of the ones that finally realize what was in front of them all along.

My eyes are now wide open and ready to take a shot to the beginning of this new chapter in my destiny.

Having a career in entertainment business seems to give you an opportunity, but also a responsibility.

Being able to tell a story would not save lives or do a dramatic change in ours. But it could inspire you, it gives hope or reality. It could teach about forgiveness and learn how to love, it could transport you out of your reality for just a moment or brings out to light part of your life that you could connect to the story.

Getting to touch people you will never meet in your life. In a deeper meaning than just a quick conversation with them around a drink. For a little time of your day, you could laugh your heart out or be a casserole of different kind of emotions. For a few minutes to a few hours, you could understand a side of a story completely differently than the one you could have with your own opinions.

Watching, listening or reading a story could leave you more open-minded, teach you something you would add in your routine, starve you to a knowledge you just now have to have, see things in a different light.

Telling stories is not something that is necessary to live, but reaching people for just an instant, being able to connect with them on a same emotion without even having to know them or their story… Connect to someone in a way that is indescribable, to strangers that are probably totally different from one another.

That’s the magic.

That’s what I want to do. That’s what I am trying to get an opportunity to learn new knowledge and new skills into. That’s what I hope getting a chance to do.

What about you ?

Did your dreams become reality ? Did you work enough for it ? Could you honestly say you tried everything you could have done to succeed in realizing your dream ?

Or are you trying to find the path to get to it ?
